Applicants for Portuguese citizenship may refer to the below links, where relevant information on the different options/paths to obtain the Portuguese citizenship are available.

Please note that, whenever payment is required, applicants must settle the payment to Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado (IRN) beforehand, as the corresponding application form will only be sent to the applicant’s email address once the payment is complete. When applicable, the submission of a Certificate of Clearance must be translated, but it does not need to be legalized.

 

Attribution of Portuguese Citizenship:

 

A) Applicant born overseas whose mother and/or father is a Portuguese citizen and wishes to register the birth into the Portuguese civil registry or declares that he wants to be a Portuguese national:

- Above 18 years of age, payment required beforehand, the form is sent to the applicant’s email address once the payment is complete.

- Under 18 years of age, no payment required, the application form can be directly uploaded.

B) Applicant born overseas with at least one direct 2nd-degree Portuguese ancestor who has not lost Portuguese citizenship, provided all other legal requirements are fulfilled:

- Above 18 years of age, payment required beforehand, the form is sent to the applicant’s email address once the payment is complete.

- Under 18 years of age, no payment required, the application form can be directly uploaded.

Acquisition of Portuguese Citizenship:

 

A) Applicant minor or incapable whose mother and/or father acquired Portuguese citizenship after the applicant’s birth:

Payment required beforehand, the form is sent to the applicant’s email address once the payment is complete

B) Applicant married for more than 3 years to a Portuguese citizen or living in a non-marital partnership for more than 3 years with a Portuguese citizen:

Note: For the purposes of obtaining citizenship through a non-marital partnership longer than 3 years, Article 14(2) of Decree-Law 237-A/2006 of 14 December (which approves the Portuguese Citizenship Regulation) states that «Foreigners who have been living together for more than three years with Portuguese nationals under conditions similar to those of the spouses, regardless of gender, must declare this if they wish to acquire citizenship, provided that they have previously obtained judicial recognition of the common-law marriage situation.»

Once the applicant has gathered all the supporting documents, settled the payment (when applicable) and completed the application form, an appointment must be scheduled for the legalisation of the applicant's signature and, if necessary, the sending of the application file to IRN, subject to the payment of a processing fee of 50,00 Euros (which includes the legalisation of the signature).

 

Should the applicant decide to send the application directly to Conservatória dos Registos Centrais by post, the following addressed should be used: Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, 198, 1099-003 Lisboa, Portugal. In this case, only the legalisation of the applicant's signature will be charged (20,00 Euros).

Appointments are made through a single category (Atendimento Geral – Todos os serviços) and in one appointment is possible to submit only one citizenship request. Should the applicant intend to submit more than one citizenship requests, the corresponding number of appointments must be booked. On the day of the appointment, the consular officers will assess the documentation provided. Applicants must bring along the ID and Passport. Other notarial services such as passport true copies might be needed.

 

After sending the application to Portugal, all communications regarding the case will be between the applicant and IRN as the Embassy of Portugal in Singapore will no longer has access to the case.
